Lollipops work for a short time. We have to find some other alternatives as well.
They're trying to figure that out in school. Yes, he has sensory issues. I think it could be a distraction for him because he might not like to do something or just anxiety since I don't think he loves being at school. This behavior has been a problem before. It usually gets worse before it gets better but it will go away at some point but it does keep him from doing what he needs to be doing in school. I will suggest the rice or pasta bins and maybe get some cool whip for school. His speech therapist and classroom behaviorist are involved. Not sure about the OT but I will ask her too. Right now they're just taking data on the behavior and a behavior plan might be the next step.
Do you know "why" he does it? Is it to stimulate his hands, his tongue or get a reaction out of people? It's easier to find a substitute-socially acceptable behavior if you know the function of this behavior. Maybe an OT at the school can help. Does he have sensory issues? Years ago, my son loved playing with rice grains in bins or shaving cream on the table.
