My son Jonathan will be turning 17 soon. I'm wondering what we should do when he is 18. Do we have to file for guardianship or are there less restrictive alternatives that will enable us to help him with his finances and health. I've been reading about guardianship and it seems kind of scary. I have to go through training to be his guardian, however, I've been raising him since birth! Washington state. I've been browsing the state web pages and there is a state training I would have to go through. Then I read an article saying judges are trying to get away from family members being guardians be because they prefer professionals.

Guardianship is best. but tell then get a Power of attorney. where are you located. I'm in Houston TX and I didn't need any training for being a guardian to my oldest and we are now doing it with my second kids.
