Change is stressful for these little ones. When they are expected to do more than they have been expected to do before, it can really change things. My son has amazing language skills, but in stressful situations, he quits talking and gets agitated, and escalates to violence. He also quit talking about the age of 3 and we had to do a lot of work with him to draw him out again.

My grandson got worse when he started school. His sensory seeking magnified, the repetition started again and his sleep patterns changed not to mention the other children's behavior was mimicked. Took me about a month and a half to realize he was on sensory overload and the teacher had no experience with ASD children. I have taken him out of pre k and he does walk in services at the elementary school for OT, ST and Special Ed Svcs. He is so much better and he gets the school and social experience twice a week. I supplement his teaching "school work" at home.

Fyi all children make steps forward and then fall back. When something new is introduced to any child they tend to lose a little elsewhere for a while. This said it can be more prevalent with autistic kids. My sons handwriting is a nightmare... he is now in grade 4 and I would swear his handwriting was better two years ago. This is in part to his lack of wanting to write. He is getting help in school for his handwriting, but it isn't seeming to have significant impact at this point. He also has fine motor skill and upper body motor skill issues that have been noticeable since he was quite young. He is also in such a rush to write things that he doesn't take the time to put the pencil on the paper and push down. It is not important to him so therefore ..."NOT IMPORTANT". He gets easily bored with the work at school. He wants to do it fast and move on. HE is extremely intelligent. This can make it difficult to keep him on task while the teacher is trying to keep 20 other kids on task at the same time.
