MyZett is right, it is usually something called Trichotillomania and is brought on by stress or anxiety.

There was another mom here who just posted about her daughter and hair pulling though.
In her case, 3 medical professionals ruled out Trich as a Dx but rather they all felt the daughter was copying another child in her class who was a hair puller and got attention for it.

A psychologist can help you figure out if it is indeed Trich pretty quickly if you are not sure by reading the links.

My son is a hair-puller as well.
He even pulled out all of his eyelashes.

We mostly used fidget toys with stringy parts he could pull on instead of his hair. We kept a few around the house. When we saw him pulling, we would get one and just say "here, use this instead". You don't want to bring negative attention to it.
We also kept his hair buzzed but you probably don't want to do that! ;)

When my son moved on to his eyelashes because his hair was too short, we got him non-prescription glasses which acted as a physical barrier and gentle reminder not to pull his lashes.
He still twirls his hair if it gets long enough but no longer pulls it out.

My daughter is 23 and she used to pull her hair out when she was younger.

I know of a boy who did this. He's also on the spectrum, and his Mom used medication to help with the problem. It was determined to be stress in his case. Sorry....hang in there!
