My 19 month old son was diagnosed with ASD 2 weeks ago, no spoken words to date, and I've been reading about baby sign language as a way to help communication. Anyone have a good or bad experience with it? Any tips or ideas?
I used some signs with my son: more, yes, no, eat, milk, etc...just basic things he needed. It did cut down on the frustration, but that was before the age of the iPad. I have seen some incredible communication apps. A child can touch food and you can download pics of the food he eats! Good luck!
I wanted sign language to work but my kids just didn't really get it. Despite trying all the suggested ways to teach them, it didn't work for us. They started to pick them up around 2 1/2 but by that time, they were starting to use a few actual words so we encouraged verbal requests at that point.
We used the Signing Times DVD's. His verbal language grew while watching as well. Good luck. Take care
We used sign with all three of our boys. We had positive results from it. We actually saw a growth in verbal language once the sign was in place. I think it took away the frustration.
