Reverted Toileting
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My 7 year old (moderate to severe ASD) was completely toilet trained until about 6 months ago when he reverted back to 'pooping' in his underwear. He will not go in public but only at home (thank goodness). We are finding ourselves cleaning /showering him numerous times each day and are beginning to get frustrated with this ongoing issue. He will sometimes go on demand (we know he has to go as soon as he gets home from school), but he normally fights this by yelling or jumping up and down on the… read more

Had that issue too, except no pullups, cause he was too old for pull ups. We had to work with him on certain underwear he liked by letting him pick them out, ensuring he wasn't constipated after the doc verified he was by getting Mucilax and putting a bit in his drink every other day to regulate him, then we also found we let him keep toilet wipes in with him at all times, and found all this started working. If we only knew this back at age 5 thru 9, we might not have endured those years of fighting with it all. Hope these ideas will help so you don't have to wait.

Is it possible that he is experiencing anxieties due to a recent change, event, or illness? Could be something as simple as the seat being too cold now that it's winter, or not liking the sound it makes hitting the water in the bowl. Could be sensory, he feels better when he feels it in his underwear, whereas having it freefall into the toilet might feel like he's lost control. Maybe it splashed him once and he's avoiding that happening again. Just some troubleshooting thoughts.

You have to make him go once every hour throughout the day then before bed and keep it consistent. We had the same issue until our Psychologist told us to do that and one year of doing that and it stopped. Hope this helps.

My 4.5 years old do that with #1, when ever he is high on yeast. He will go and put his pants for wash and say sorry. He never do with #2, but when I control his yeast he is all fine.
