Hi,
My son was diagnosed as Autism and now he is 2 year 9 months. He is taking ABA from Santa Clara County.By March 22nd he will be finishing his 3 years and transferring to school district. Now we are currently in Sunnyvale,CA and planning to move to Charlotte,NC in March after my son finishes his ABA from County. So I am worried about school there. How will I get to know about local resources and schools there.Does any body have information about this or where to find this?
Call the local district that you will be moving to. Ask to speak to the autism programs coordinator or supervisor. North Carolina is where TEACCH is from so it is TEACCH heavy not research proven methods such as ABA or other methods such as P.E.C.S so be ready to know what works for you son and how to ask for it (yes "ask" don't go in demanding…it will work better to play some what nicely at first). TEACCH does work for some, and has lots of good practices, but be wary if that is the only methodology they pitch.
Also when calling around locally don't forget to call the local area disability resource center and the school district's parent resource center and speak to people there. Ask around and find out if you can get the contacts for SEPTA ()special education PTA if they have one or the SEAC, special education advisory committee) these would be other parents who could give you some insider information.
good luck
