I live in Massachusetts and applied for waiver program, we already went for assessment and received letter saying my son is eligible and someone will contact me.I wondered if anyone knows how long it usually takes to be contacted and when will he start receiving services? I also wondered if its quaranteed for ABA services or is it what they think he needs?
The waiver program is a long process and the is a long waiting list. We just gave up because it was not worth it. It used to be good for respite and some other services but the money has been cut back so it is hard to get. They go by needs first so if your child is not severely autistic it is not worth the bother.
When it comes to ABA that is the school districts responsibility even if it is after school. Be for going into residential they were paying for 3 hrs a day after school because the in school was not enough. Most services are the schools responsibility you just have to fight for them and get the documentation to support it.
I forgot that in this state it is the law that if the district cannot provide something they then have to pay an outside vendor to do it for them.
Yes both my children qualified but then they put you on a waiting list that basically puts the child in line by need so they give them out to the worst cases first and go down the line. There are limited funds so that is why they do this.
As far as I am aware in this state the school is to provide ABA there is no difference in districts that sounds like a ploy. I would complain to the director of special Ed and if that does not seem to get you anywhere go to the superintendent of schools. Threaten an advocate or attorney, you have to push them and let them know you are serious. They may ask you to have an evaluation done and if that is the case do it even though it is a stall tactic because you are going to use that against them.
If you have not done so already apply for DDS department of developmental services they will assign a case worker and they will point you in the right direction. They also are good with knowing the law and your rights.
Being in a bigger city the schools try to push people by using budget as an excuse but they have to follow the law same as a small town does. We live in a small town and the district pays for 360k a year for residential for my daughter because they have to, a big city is no different. It is a state law not a district law
So it doesnt matter that I received the letter saying he is eligible its still gonna be a long wait? When I went for the assessment I was told being his age they put him as priority. Unfortunately I did fight with school to get them to give ABA in I.E.P but in my city the school does not provide ABA but the classroom practices ABA methodology. . The school does provide speech and ot for my son.
Sorry im on my phone its acting up..my sons school district doesnt provide ABA but classroom practices aba methodology.ive tried fighting them ..they provide speech and ot.
