My 10 year old son (and his 9 year old typical brother) really want a dog and I am thinking about getting him a companion dog, but I am conflicted. My son is quite high functioning, he does not bolt or put himself in danger 99% of the time, or need help with any everyday activities (he takes care of all his personal grooming, homework, making his breakfast and lunch, etc), or need help at school, but he is sometimes socially awkward though he has a number of friends at school.

It doesn't sound like you son needs a service dog but I think there a lot of great life lessons that can be learned by helping taking care of a dog.

I'm in a similar situation. I'd like to get a dog for our son as a companion at home, but first to convince my husband :)
