Homework Strategies
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was doing homework with my 6 yr old son tonight, and he seemed to be very unfocused and forgetful. He was not able to answer a lot of math problems I know he knows. It got me thinking about homework strategies and what things you have done to help your child with Autism be successful at completing homework at home?

I make my daughter do homework right after school otherwise it's hard to get her refocused. She also loves to play Disney Infinity and go outside and play and play on her Ipad, which she is not allowed to do until homework is done. This gives her motivation to get it done. Don't get m

Do the homework in small pieces. Maybe work on 2-3 questions and then take a break and come back to it later. You may even ask the teacher to send home less homework(instead of 10 questions, maybe only 5 instead) and should possibly be outlined in the IEP.

Here are a few I try with my boys:

Give them a timeframe of when we will do homework. If we can make it a routine that we always do it after dinner then that seems to get them to comply better.
Eliminate distractions. No TV, clear the table.
Give them a goal to meet like "5 pages". Lots of high fives and good jobs as they answer questions correctly and complete a page.
These are just some to name a few. Would love to hear from other parents 😀
