Can I Write On The IEP?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had my IEP meeting on Wednesday. I received a copy of it the next day to review and sign. As I read it, I noticed that a few things that were written down are inaccurate. Example: "Mrs. X has not observed Ian in the classroom", when she actually has. Among other things. Can I write on the IEP, or do I attach a separate sheet (Parent Attachment)? If I write a letter disagreeing with my son's placement, is that going to be attached to his IEP? Thank you!!

Make sure you notate the things you do not agree with, and initial it next to it and make the correction, then sign the bottom of the page. If you do not agree with the document you do not have to sign it. In this case you tell them this is not what was agreed upon and tell them you will not sign it until everything is corrected. If you do not sign or agree to it by law they have to keep the old IEP in place and active they cannot use the new one.

The school districts prey upon the people who do not know what their or their child's rights are. They also push things if they think you will back down and let them get away with it. Look up Wrights law there is some great information on what your rights are. If something is not correct do not accept it.

yes, you can write right on it but if you want it to stay in his files you must sign each page that you write on otherwise they just reprint the page you write on and destroy it. Also ask that they include your concerns in the written notice page.

Going to give you an example of writing a formal letter to add to the IEP - what you want to convey is what you are finding works best for your child at home- if he has a physical issue that must be understood and if he or she is taking meds what they are- I would add in that IEP a letter as your child changes so does his or her needs' Here is a short blurb that I wrote to the Title 1 teacher -

I believe that Mrs. Baker has maintained a open understanding of the physical issues Logan has that correlate to behavior. She calls or sends a note to ask, when relevant to any marked behavior . I have been able to translate information to her with ease. However, I noticed, I had more problems with teacher to teacher from year to year kind of relay of information. Each year when I would explain that he had this significant problem physically - Some would not listen to the explanation, and or understanding the relevance to the GI and Learning Disabilities, how that relates, to behavior and the learning process. I was told on two occations that Logan’s BM’s or issues with the bathroom are his problems. not a school problem - or a educational problem- Another teacher, said; she did not have that problem.- so she saw no relevance to the educational piece- I took Logan home five times that year, due to he was impacted. He had severe hemeroids. I had to pull him out from under the desk he was so ill along with hallucinating due to he had not gone in 9 days, Terri Patterson was present for that. he has had functional constipation sense birth- . 2 scripted meds for that. There has been only one teacher in my experience at RRO that did take the time to read the IEP. and participated in helping me establish a firm connection, -due to her understanding of it. This data she collected is being looked at by other doctors and by Autism institutes, My information gathered from Logan is being used on a the “My Autism Team. a national site. “ We have worked with sensory centers, Neurocore, neurofeeback- and 2 Clinics for suplimintations to correct his GI and IBS- Today Logan is not constipated and off medication. his headaches are minimizing . I would appreciate the you would add to the IEP that Logan has marked constipation issues that when behavior flairs that it is possible that he is dealing with issues with the body, that effect the brain _ I would like for you to add that to the IEP and I would like for you to add that Logan often putts his head down due to headaches from the constipation and eye contact is limited due to the constipation cycles _ If all teachers know Logan is not trying to be rude or mean or that this is a physical disability happening then the teachers are less likely to become irritated when he does it saving them time and Logan any un- due attention or distress.

Thank you for adding those things to His IEP
Kind Regards
Parent
