Autism And Seizures
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My 6 year old son on the spectrum had two seizures in the past two weeks. This is the first time he has ever had a seizure. I googled autism and seizures and found a website that stated 1:4 children with autism disorder also have seizures. Do you believe this to be fact? Does your child on the spectrum have seizures as well?

The stat that I saw was 40% of kids will have abnormal EEG though not all of these may have seizures. We haven't done EEG and don't have any sign of seizures. I do believe it is worthwhile doing an overnight EEG but haven't been able to get a referral for it.

My son's Developmental Pediatrician did say they were more likely to have seizures and sent us for testing. His tests came back normal.

it is a common secondary diagnosis, and I can also tell it is common for a Doctor to have an autistic child checked for seizures if they even suspect there may be a possibility the child has seizure activity. I also manage a company that provides wheelchairs to disabled people and it is also common for people with CP or MR as well. There is always a possibility if a person has a mental impairment.

We have had our Daughter tested and although it was an overnight test, she did relatively well with it, and she is non-verbal.

Seizures and epilepsy are more common among Autistics than neurotypicals, though I don't know the exact comorbidity rate. 1:4 sounds a bit high, but it's plausible.

I had one febrile seizure as a young child, but I doubt it was Autism-related (ie: it probably wasn't the result of a comorbid condition, and it couldn't have been the result of Autism itself).

My son had the overnight at home EEG and it came back normal. However he was diagnosed with absence seizures. His neurologist said that the seizures do not always show up. He had a referral that was taking forever so I saved up and had to pay cash. It was worth it just to get the information and get started on a path. Even if you haven't had the EEG they can give you a medicine to carry with you in case of seizure. GOOD LUCK! HUGS!
