So Gabriel is going to start transition from his ifsp to iep. This now gives us a option on schools I can either leave him at ucp or change him to an Orange County elementary school. I would love to leave him at ucp but the Hugh downfall is that the aba therapist is not permitted at ucp so Gabriel is restricted the days he can go. Where if I take him to elementary he may be able to get more aba therapy . Anyone have experience that they can share to help with this hard choice
@A MyAutismTeam Member I love UCP i do. They do Not use ABA therapy though. They also do not have any therapist for the ABA which is why I have an issue.
I have an ABA therapist that comes to the house twice a week they are willing to go to whatever school i choose.
In the state of Florida I BELIEVE that by law the insurance is required to cover therapies including ABA for kids diagnosis with Autism. (my insurance is AVMED) and we are not paying any copays as long as we do not visit the actual office for ABA therapy.
Currently Gabriel is to young for the Mckay so I'm not to worried for now
I did not realize that outside therapists were not permitted at UCP. It changes my opinion of them. One of the first things I look for in a school is the ability to work with outside therapists, (as long as they are licensed, insured, etc…)
Still, I have heard a lot of good things about UCP. I assume that they use ABA methods to deal with any issues? If not, then I would want to know what else they are using.
If the UCP does not offer an ABA program, then I would continue to pull him out for ABA two days a week. (I am not sure if you can pull him out three days per week, because it might impact his McKay score?) Anyway, there is a certain minimum number of hours that he will need to be in the school system (including charter schools) in order to get a McKay.
If UCP is still your first choice for school, then the McKay score may not matter as much. But if you are considering a private school then in some cases, the McKay will help cover the cost.
We are in Seminole, and we pulled our son from school two days a week for ABA (at Quest). But the Seminole UCP did not offer the kind of environment we were looking for.
Our son went to Quest for kindergarten, and they have been doing a great job. Because of the small class sizes, though, our son is not around typical kids all that much, and doesn't really know how to react to typical conversations.
If you don't mind me asking, which elementary was able to offer in-school ABA? Because that would be a great arrangement for a lot of kids.
