I asked my son's elementary school, "What makes you more qualified than his psychiatrist? If you know one autistic kid, that is all you know - that one autistic kid. This IS autistic behavior and it's not my fault or his that you don't recognize it."
They then told me, again, that all they see is the depression and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I threatened them with other legal action for things they were doing wrong (violating LRBI laws). But said I'd let it slide if they found him a more appropriate placement in a fully special ed classroom by the next week. Miraculously, he was moved.
I have a HFA son who is 7. He also shows high aggression (hits, scratch, kick, throwing, screams, calls people "Jack ass") at school. I school wants him reevaluated cause "his behavior is not autistic" even though he has a medical diagnoses'. The school is also trying to blame his behavior on his home environment and even trying to put it in his IEP. They even have the police telling me what is "not autism behavior". Our household is conceder "middle America" so we cant qualify to get him any help. I cant seem to get it through there heads that his not that aggressive at home so there has to be something AT SCHOOL that is bothering him.
My HFA girl was a danger to others! People think my son has HFA, but that's because he speaks differently than most who are severe. He is a fairly extreme danger to others.
My HFA daughter was termed dangerous after being continually bullied by others in junior high. She snapped one day and permanently scarred a boy's face with her attack. She had to go to court. None of the other bullies ever got sent to court. Doesn't seem fair, does it?!
