Educating Children with Autism by the National Research Council says services should be a minimum of 25 hours per week, 12 months a year. Because schools can't offer all that time, it's nice to supplement school (pre-school?) hours with ABA, if you can. The best advice I got was to keep my son engaged at home. Have him help out around the house (have him help with laundry, bring me things, etc), show him what errands we were running with a visual list, and let him make simple choices. Do2learn.com helped me a lot at home. I printed their icons and covered them with clear contact paper and used velcro backing.
