How Do I Discuss Masturbation With My Autistic Son Without Confusing Him Too Much?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My now 14 year old has discovered that he gets erections, and plays with himself, sometimes openly. I have told him not to do this where people can see him do it. But, I also told him that people do it, but not in front of other people. So how do I address this if it continues to happen?

I have also told my son that its normal and ok but that it must be done in the privacy if his room. I promised him that I will always knock before entering. He was doing it at any time in any room before and it was very embarrassing for both of us.

Hi Tara, I Totally Agree About The Wierdness, But They Will Need An Appropriate Sexual Outlet As They Mature. At A Conference They Suggested Bedroom Only Because If They Masturbate In A Gym Shower Or Public Washroom It Could Be A Problem.

Im kinda having the same issue with my 11 year old daughter. I keep telling her no..you do that in private. (Bedroom, shower etc).I think she understands but..sometimes I know, she knows it freaks me out and when she is caught she simply laughs at me...

Granted its healthy, nothing wrong with it..but....its weird trying to explain whats ok and whats not..in the sex department. ..with your child.....

It was suggested at a conference that I was at to allow masturbation only in the privacy of your child's bedroom. I agree that it's healthy and just needs some supervision. We had good luck teaching my son to ask permission and then watching time and frequency. Also teaching clean up and rules. (We don't allow it if we have company. No talking about it in public. etc) Good luck!

My 21 year old does this too. I told him, if he wanted to do it, do it in the privacy of his own room. He doesn't do it in public, but when he comes and stays the night at my house.
