He seems to be doing it just for pleasure. He does it some when he is angry, but mostly not. It seems to be increasing lately. And I'm noticing his forehead is actually bulging out more where he hits it. He does this mostly during times when no one is trying to engage him when he's off running around on his own. Unfortunately I can't redirect him all day long seeing that I have 2 other kids to take care of. What can I do?

Than you both for your responses. I guess I'm lucky he does not hit others like he hit himself. I try to get him to clap instead of hitting his head, but he's usually so fast that I don't see it coming. I will just keep trying to redirect as much as I can.

This is most commonly a sensory issue so he is looking for stimulation of some sort. This is very tough to eliminate so it is best to try to redirect the best you can. ABA would be good in this instance and also try to train him to use a pillow or something soft. Reward him every time he uses the pillow for a while, at least it is safer.

My 3 year old Grandson does the same thing. He bashes his head into everything and everyone. He does it constantly all day. I think his forehead is permanently red from it now. He hurts me often by head butting my head or back or wherever he wants. We have tried everything, even timeouts. Now he is hitting, kicking, and pinching us. We are now taking away toys, tv , and privelages to see if that helps, its been 4 days with no luck. We are also at a loss. If you find anything that works please let me know and I will do the same. Good luck!
