Why We Do Need A Diagnosis?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

After 14 months since our first contact with the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, we thought we had reached the stage for a formal diagnosis but we blew it because we were late due to traffic and told to come back in a couple of months. My wife thinks paying $1790 for the diagnosis evaluation alone is a waste would be better spent on more ST or back to OT again. Our lateness was our fault but we both felt insulted that even nearly paying two grand and waiting over year for our daughter wasn't… read more

Trust me you want the diagnosis because I can gaurantee the school district will give you issues at some point and without it they will be able to get away with taking away services. On top of this in most states the therapies are the responsibility of the school not the insurance company. They may tell you different but it is their responsibility

The thing that all of us need to realize is this is about the child, not about schedules or someone running late. If they are running late then we as parents are expected to either reschedule or wait and have the appointment the same day but later. They think it is perfectly ok to hang out with this child until they are able to take the appointment. Keep one thing in mind they are the professionals and in being so are licensed through the state they practice in. If you are not happy with them you can wage a complaint against them with this agency from the state, usually the American Medical Association or the Academy of Psychologist/Psychiatry. You can also get referrals from them for a child psychologist/ psychiatrist in your area. When making appointments over the phone with them you need to ask questions, how long will this appointment take, what happens if we are late or need to cancel and so on. Don't make any appointments until you have answers to these questions as well. Things do go wrong when you have to be somewhere like a doctors appointment so be prepared. I hope this helps take care Sue Banks.

Studensmom53 is right... When I first took my son to be evaluated for Autism I was told the Dr. didn't have enough time seeing she was running late. I would have to make another appointment after I waited 6 months for this one. I pitch a bitch right in the waiting room. Then I contacted the hospital Administrator. Told them I had an appointment and what had transpired. I had an appointment the following week! Late or not they should of accommodated you and your family. Medicaid here in Massachusetts pays for everything if you have no other insurance. I have B/C B/S. What they don't pay Medicaid pays. I would check into it. My sons also get social security disability payments each month. You have an IEP in place. The school has to follow it to the letter. It's the law. You are in charge of it not them.If they want to try and change it you can disagree. If they disagree then the school is obligated to send your child for an independent eval. You both have to agree on the evacuation and who does it. The school is responsible for the payment not you. It's a Federal Law that they have to follow. They get funding for special education. Check your Federal laws under special education. Good luck...

I am sorry to hear the trouble you had. They should have allowed the appointment to happen anyway. I would complain to the appropriate people with in the organization about this. A diagnosis is necessary as your child will need it in order to receive the right kind of help in and out of school. Over his life time he will also need it in order to receive critical benefits to pay for any care he or she may need. I would consider finding an organization closer to home as well. This way if something causes you to be running late you won't have far to travel. When setting up any appointments you need to ask questions, what if one of you, meaning you or the evaluator is running late or any appointment is going over their time. Getting this in writing will be helpful as well. You are legally entitled to every thing in writing so I would get it from them. Don't just accept this from them. You have time set aside for your appointment. No matter who is at fault you had an appointment. If they are late why is it that we as parents are suppose to accept this but if we run into traffic or other issues that make us late we have to reschedule? It's wrong and they need to adjust for us as well. My son and I had an appointment with the child psychologist, we left even early to assure we would be there on time. However there was a really bad accident that held us up by 30 minutes past the appointment time. This was the only time slot available for four months. They wanted to reschedule but I told them no we needed to get this done now. I made a few calls after words and found another child psychologist who was more understanding. Mind you I don't make a habit of being late to any thing, but things do happen. The appointment did happen but only after I made them realize if they canceled I would be in touch with the insurance company asking them to not pay for an appointment they refused to allow to happen. Take care Sue Banks

In the state of Ohio, the Bureau of something something (BCMH) will pay for diagnosis of autism and cover additional testing for 6 months (genetic, yay!). So we got it covered. And then we got a Waiver with Medicaid and it pays for copays and deductibles and we get additional free speech therapy that the school wouldn't do. @A MyAutismTeam Member
