How Did You Get Your Child With ASD Off Of The Baby Bottle And Just Use A Sippy/training Cup?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Ok so as far as the public and most of my family knows, my just turned 4 year old boy drinks from a sippy/training cup, but in reality, he will only drink his 1/4 apple juice & 3/4 water out of the sippy/training cup and refuses to use the sippy/training cup to drink his 1/3 chocolate & 2/3 vanilla almond milk - it must be in a baby bottle.

We have to mix all of his daytime medicines (otc and supplements) in 2-8oz bottles of 1/4 apple juice & 3/4 water and 2-8oz 1/3 chocolate & 2/3 vanilla… read more

We tried MANY different sippies until we hit on one he would use, and swiftly hid all the bottles. I think it was largely a sensory thing. The tommee tippees spill-proof cups (must have a large spout, sort of similar to a bottle nipple, he won't go for the next step up) have a soft rubber layer on the spout. Before that, we tried all kinds of straws, spouts, etc. We wasted money on cups he refused, but it was worth it in the end. Also, start with a very motivating (sweet for our boy) beverage when offering the new cup. I also used a bit of honey on the spout to get him to put it in his mouth in the first place haha.

Our ASD boy regressed at 18mos but never Lost his sippy cup skills. Unfortunately, regular cup skills are a work in progress. We use a cut-out cup, straw drinking, and attempt to use sippy lids similar to cup tops.

We always tried to separate medications from food and drink. We did not want to run the risk that he would reject any particular food (or drink) just because he disliked the medicine.

If you have a system that is working, I wouldn't necessarily worry that you need to change it. If he has medicine that helps him sleep, then he might associate the bottle with the feeling of getting sleepy.

Try offering him different drinks in different cups. If you have a "thermos" type cup with a built in straw, try that with a milkshake. He might gradually realize that other types of cups can be fun.

Our son always insisted on taking at least use sippy cup to bed with him. After a while, we switched it to unsweetened almond milk, and then to water. Once we realized that he didn't go to sleep any faster with milk, then it didn't matter what was in the zippy cup.

It was around 4 we lost the bottle. If you can put the meds in as little liquid as possible in the bottle.. once he chugs it.. put water in his bottle for the rest of the night and day... and put any good stuff in the sippy cup. We were worried about dehydration but she hasn't used a bottle since a few months after 4. We gave her water in the bottle or soda or juice in a sippy cup... thing was she could only use a straw.. then eventually she learned how to use the sippy cup. So yes.. I cheated with soda. Not a lot like 1/4 cup if that. She loves it.. and it got me what I want :( She will not take medicine at ALL unless it's hidden. Oddly she has no problem with stuff floating in her drinks. But if you take baby tylenol in a dropper.. she will ralph it all up. Very stubborn
