Speech did not help our non-verbal autistic daughter at all. Her ABA therapist has done wonders with getting her to communicate in other healthy ways, teaching her to wait, point, pat, etc. instead f screaming and stomping. We also got her an iPad with a few touch to talk apps where she can pick pictures (like PECS but it talks) she is becoming more familiar with this and has actually asked for pizza and outside time using her iPad, so we are hopeful. My adivice is to try everything, then rule ot what doesn't seem to work. Good luck!
Speech therapy is obviously going to help, but tracing the child how to use PECS and sign language is also great as well. Once the child can get some communication skills you will notice that the frustration level will drop dramatically. They do not have to speak full sentences for you to notice the difference, just for them to be able to pick what the want from choices does wonders for them.
Really? Wow I'll have to check that out thanks
We saw the biggest gains from biomedical treatments. I highly recommend reading the books "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics" by Dr. Kenneth Bock and "The Autism Book" by Dr. Bob Sears and finding a good DAN! or other biomed doctor.
Have you seen the documentary 'A Mothers Courage'? In it they highlight a therapy a mother, named Soma, came up with for her son.Check it out :~) http://www.halo-soma.org/main.php?sess_id=ca6dc...
