Metal Dental Caps
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 9 year olds dental "plan" includes placing 4 metal caps on his 6 year permanent molars.
I hear both pros and cons on this topic. I would prefer to be safe than sorry . Has anyone witnessed a change in function with or without these caps?

Our son has had this done and I don't see any cons to it. He had very bad demineralization on all 4 in the very back. We had it done 3 years ago and he seems completely alright so far. We go see his dentist at UCLA every 3 months and have not seen any concerns since we had them put on.

Im a retired dental hygienist with 30 years experience. You didn't state as to why you wanted to have the metal caps placed in the first place. It's not done without a reason. Sealants are widely used very effectively as a preventive tool for the very important permanent first molars. I'd never agree with placing a crown on a tooth unless it was dentally diagnosed. Are the teeth decayed? It's hard to answer without more information.

I have been a dental assistant for the past 9 years and I have never seen silver caps placed on permanent teeth. I have only seen them placed on baby teeth. They usually put sealants on the permanent teeth. But if your dentist suggest it. I'm sure their is a reason behind it. Just do what u think will be best for your child.

I never had caps on my molars and my teeth are fine. I did have sealants put on them which are quick to do (quicker is better for those on the spectrum!)and help prevent cavities in the crevices.
