My son loves sports but we have been unsuccessful participating in mainstream sports. So I was wondering about Special Olympics, and what others experience has been.
My son has been involved with Special Olympics for about 7 or 8 years and it is an awesome way to try lots of sports in a safe, accepting environment. We've trying swimming, basketball, tennis, golf, and bowling and have been very happy with our experience with the program and volunteers. We contacted them through our county Parks and Recreation department.
My daughter is involved in Special Olympics and is a nonverbal eight year old. She does track and field events, some assisted and some not. She loves it and actually took 2nd place in the 100 meter a few weeks ago.
I would recommend it if your child is athletic and likes the outside. My daughter goes to an autism school so they take her and practice with her. I am not sure how you would get in contact with them but I am sure they have a local office.
I would love someday for my son to participate in more sports but he's a little on the young side right now. We did however find and are very active in Miracle League baseball. There are local chapters all over and offer both competitive and noncompetitive leagues. Otherwise check with your local park district, they will know where the local special recreation and competitive programs are for special needs.
I would love for my daughter to take part in Special Olympics also. Check with the Regional Center in your area.
Thank you all for your input! I believe that I'm going to look further into Special Olympics for my son.
