@A MyAutismTeam Member and I were pondering a book with contributions from parents here on MAT
The premise is that while 1/68 kids is on the spectrum, parents of the other 67 have no clue what it's really like
This comes from reading some AMAZING stories here over the years. The quirkiness, the comorbidities, multiple kids in one family; the adaptations and coping skills we learn by the seat of our pants; the isolation and loneliness, the struggles, the funny and bizarre. I think we could hit… read more
Plenty of issues besides autism out there so there's interest if you aren't directly affected somehow. I posted months ago about the 30% rise in autism diagnoses reported by the CDC and it got 3 replies I think. Scary numbers are just scary numbers that are meaningless. No cause, no cure and the "it won't happen to me" mentality drown out the numbers.
I couldn't find a single member of Congress with an autistic kid. It's going to take a while for this problem to really hit home. You've got to remember FDR had polio and couldn't walk but no one had photos of him in a wheelchair for 12 years as president. We kept disabled people at home and later shipped them off to institutions. Things have changed but I don't think most people care about what we are going to do with the huge number of ASD people who 75% of the time can't live independently as adults. My nieces and nephews know autistics kids but in my generation I can't remember hearing the word "autism" or ever see an autistic kid in school.
I just went to the CDC site to check their stats, and I immediately saw this page. One family's story from Georgia; hardly any details.
This is a widely-read site, and may serve the purpose. Submit your story.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, That's outrageous! If what you write has been well documented, and the epidemiologists stand by the number, then something the kids are getting exposed to is causing this. I can live with correlations and associations and statistical manipulations, but *hard expletive deleted*! I've been fighting my own autism shit storm for 18 months and haven't paid attention to current research, except for the stuff that really stands out. New Jersey?
The statistics in the state where I live (nj) are 1in28 chidren and more so 1in24 boys. It is staggering, rather frightening. Almost 4 years into our journey and our story continues. I do believe sharing is therapeutic and sharing with others who relate truly helps in the journey we each travel.
The idea doesn't mesh with the business plan of management, so I withdraw the contemplation. @A MyAutismTeam Member, don't let it stop you from telling your story. In fact, I eagerly anticipate it.
