I'm in the state of IL, and currently on state medical for my son. I've had the worst luck with finding a dentist that will lightly sedate him (or even try without) a full blown cleaning. He's now nearly 12 and seriously needs to see a dentist soon. I don't think he has a current issue but ideally I'd like to establish myself somewhere before he does!

My son had the worst time at the dentist. It took years of the dentist and hygenist prepping him, allowing him to see and touch the instruments, explaining everything and praising him. Perhaps, trying a "dry run" at the office a few times to ease the anxiety. Or ask if they can give him laughing gas to relax him..

Try contacting the Illinois State Dental Society. (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators). They might have some sliding scale or specialized dentists to recommend.

Our dentist had an oral sedation that worked with Josh. It was a very small amount (I can't remember what it is called) and kept him sleeping for long enough for the exam to take place. It was very disheartening to watch and be a part of but on the other hand, there is other way to keep him still for that period of time and it wasn't nearly that expensive.

What about your psychiatrist prescribing a drug like xanax or valium for him to take just before going?
