ADOS For Educational Diagnosis Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Colin was diagnosed by a developmental pediatrician at Kennedy Krieger then his diagnosis was confirmed by a pediatric neurologist, who when pressed felt he was HFA level 1 (whatever that really means) now I'm finally getting and ADOS done after some fighting (refused to sign IEP until it was completed) for an educational diagnosis. My question is how do I use the information when developing his IEP? What if I disagree? Is the ADOS rigid enough to force them into offering appropriate/tailored… read more

As a special ed teacher... If he is academically and behaviorally able to maintain in the inclusion setting, I recommend that. The self-contained class is never going to give him the instruction he can receive in inclusion. My son will get pulled for speech and behavior but remain in the regular classroom, he's level 1 also and gifted too. I work with kids who are mainstreaming out of self-contained and they're so far behind academically that I fear they'll never catch up. It's hard to decide but you want to piece together whatever it takes for ALL his needs to be met. Good luck mama!

I wasn't terribly impressed with the ADOS. My little one had the ADOS 3 times within a 2 month period and got 3 different results, even though she performed similarly as far as I could tell. The developmental pediatrician said she met the criteria for autism on both the language impairment and the social impairment. The school district psychologist said she met it for language but not social. The Regional Center psychologist said she met it for social but not language. DD is more social than many kids with ASD so I'm not surprised there was disagreement about whether or not she met the criteria for social impairment. But she was very delayed for language and I can't believe that the Regional Center psychologist claimed she didn't meet the ADOS criteria for language impairment. Having an "educational" diagnosis is important because it is an automatic qualifying condition for an IEP. But I wouldn't count on the ADOS to provide you with any useful information because it's so subjective.

Generally if you have a diagnosis confirmed by multiple doctors they are more apt to give you what you want but they still fight sometimes.

I would not sign anything of you do not agree, plus if they do not have a service that is needed they have to pay someone else to provide it. Even if you are not going to do it threaten an Advocate or attorney because sometimes the threat is enough to push them

Ugh...that's what I am afraid of @A MyAutismTeam Member. I want autism specific services, he already has an IEP for developmental delay but they want him in an inclusion classroom that I don't think will be good for him bc in preschool he was 1:1 to engage in a 10:2 ratio with NT peers.

Oh good, thank you @A MyAutismTeam Member. I mentioned that I was working with an advocate so maybe that helped put a fire under their butt. I feel like there's so much I need to learn before the ADOS report. It's scheduled for the 16th and his IEP "expires" on the 30th. So I'm feeling a bit pressured. I appreciate your feedback!
