A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

What kind of doctor/professional can diagnosis sensory processing disorder??? My 6 year old has a lot of sensory "issues" and is currently diagnosed with ADHD but my gut tells me either that's not the right diagnosis for him or there's something more here. We see an OT for fine motor skills and for sensory seeking behaviors and a pediatric neurologist for ADHD. The neuro should be doing it and if they do not want to I would see another one, an OT is for therapy not diagnosis so they do not do that.

We got our diagnosis from an OT. We were told by our developmental pediatrician they were the only one that could do it that insurance would accept.

Our developmental psychologist along with our speech therapist cam up with the diagnosis. First our speech therapist brought it to my attention. We then consulted our developmetnal psychologist who confirmed it. The school OT also confirmed it and began to work on it

SPD is not considered an "official" medical diagnosis, sorry! But what it sounds like you need is a full neuropsychological evaluation. The neurologist should be able to refer you to a neuropsychologist.

A neurologist or psychologist should be able to diagnose sensory processing disorder. However, be aware that this type of diagnosis is kind of a vague one. It is hard to get insurance companies to cover medical expenses under such a diagnosis. It is not listed in the DSMV. Schools often ignore this diagnosis as well as far as IEPs go.
