My daughter is getting ready to apply for SSI (California), or whatever acronym it is for benefits for her 8 yr old son. He is on the spectrum, high functioning, in a full inclusion program and does OK in school with part time instructional assistant. Looking over the paperwork, it appears there are many questions where he does not have issues. Just wondering if anyone has gone through this process with a child on the spectrum that is HF.
We did it and we not only had the RX from multiple doctors but also written statements from them. We also had evaluations from early intervention. On top of that we had all the financial paperwork as well which they requested. The other thing that happened was we met with them in person after a phone interview and we explained out hardships to the case manager. We got SSI for both children after a few weeks it was not hard for us at all. Any documentation you have will help
Thank you all for your post concerning my question. I have been out of town and just getting around to my emails. I went with my daughter to SS office Aug. 13th and it was truly a unique experience. We had several binders of all sorts of medical/therapy docs but felt extremely disorganized. The young gal helping my daughter was very nice but she needed specific dates for everything. Of course had my daughter known this she would have simply called all the places that have provided services and gotten start and end dates. She tried to ask the gal if we could come back when we had the dates organized, but she did not want her to do that. The gal was on mission at that point and was going to do the best she could with what she had. We were there for over an hour and a half! So....she said it will be up to 6 months before they contact my daughter to let her know of their decision and if they need more info they will call.
TY for your post. I'm finally applying for my 14 year old son.
Thank you for the input. I am not a regular computer user, thus it took awhile for me to read these. My daughter contacted her son's pediatrician and he responded that any physicians on the app are sent a form for the them to fill out. Not sure what to say to that. The man behind the window at SS office said get all the documentation and letters you can to plead your case. I suppose there are always hoops!
There is no real over the limit. It is based on income however there is a low limit any child can qualify for which is somewhere around $300. You still should do it because once you get SSI the child is designated as disabled and would then be able to qualify for Medicaid.
