My son is 22 yrs and has issues with almost everything, it seems. He has also been occasionally aggressive to himself and others in the recent past, but almost always directed at himself. He's not a happy camper and has gained a lot of weight, partly because of meds. He's a big guy and I'm a small gal, so sometimes it can be scary. He also has always been either really happy or really upset, I'd say about 50% of the time. Right now he is taking Trazodone 300mg, Zyprexa 5-10mg per night. I also… read more

The last time he was violent, he punched his dad in the face. We didn't call the police that time because I didnt want him charged with assault. But if there is a next time then I will for sure. I won't put up with it anymore. That time I told him that he needed to move out so I sent him to my moms for two weeks. For 2 weeks he thought about it thinking he would be leaving the home and since then uas been ok. He knows that that was the last straw. But I've had to lighten up on him a little. Before, he had a time limit on his computer which is what led to the violence when his time was up. Now as long as he showers and brushes his teeth and does his chores then he can have as much time on the computer as he wants. It's just not worth fighting over now that he is 18. I'm just hoping to find him a job so that he takes responsibilities and gets some social interaction. He has no friends really. Its very hard when they become adults. My son doesn't act like an adult but demands to be treated like one.
I wish u all the best.

My son is 18 and taking Concerta, prozac and abilify. The prozac has helped a lot. He does have violent tendencies so I know how scary it can be. I have had to call the police once because I couldn't control him.

It seems there is no one medicine that works for all of us, it's all trial and error. This makes it especially hard on our kids and us. I've been researching on the web and it is not as helpful as I had hoped. Right now I am thinking maybe medical cannabis may help. He already has experienced all the bad side effects from the antipsychotics. He has lasting twitches and has gained so much weight. He refuses to get a job, and wants to be an adult, but he doesn't act like one! He is a giant baby, and I love him to death, but I cannot see how we can keep going like this. He perpetuates on dinosaurs and the scientists bringing them back and will talk to me constantly about it. He also paces and talks to himself. He is obsessed with Dragon ball Z and has a major foot fetish, so he gets a group counseling session for that once a week. Out of all the meds he has taken, Risperdone worked the best, but he can no longer take it due to the uncontrolled
movements it creates in him. He was on it from age 11 until about 19. The twitching stared at about 16 or 17. I'm going to keep thinking and reading when I can I will let you know what happens. I'm thinking that cannabis has no really bad side effects, so I will probably give it a try and see how he is with it. Couldn't be worse than the meds he has already had. Only want the best for him, gosh it's hard. Thank you for writing back and being so honest Lisa. May God bless all of us! I'll update soon.

My son is only taking Zoloft and Clonidine for sleep issues. Takes 150 mg of Zoloft and it seems to really have mellowed him out. He used to be really angry and his dad and him have almost come to blows several times. But it seems now that he has social security and pays "rent" we give him his space with a contract of things that are expected of him and the rules if he does not meet that contract. Its been working for now, I just hope it continues to work.
