Need Opinions On First Grade Autism Unit At Public School
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Bailey started first grade on Aug. 25 at a public school, where they just started a Autism Unit for 1st and 2nd grades. This is not at her home school, it took me two months to decide to place her there, with high hopes of getting special attention for her. Her IEP places her in mainstream classes for most subjects and resource room for those she lacks most knowledge, like math
So far, she has spent all her time in TLC (behavior unit)and has only attended one math class in resource. I do not… read more

Having worked in SPED over the years I want to encourage you to try to give it a little time. If I counted correctly it has been 1 week and 2 days, so from an educator's stand point they are most likely still in the 'getting to know the kids and their needs' stage. In my experience we began to settle into the 'normal' routine of things by week 2-3. As a parent I know that this feels excruciatingly long, but in the scope of the year it is but a fraction. My advice is to have a little patience while staying true to your gut instinct. Keep attempting to establish regular, planned communication with her educational team and hopefully as things fall into place and the communication will open up soon. If in a few days things still are unacceptable for you I would recommend that you try to set up a meeting with her educational team and voice your concerns. As a parent the unknown is so worrisome, but usually from an educator's point 'no news is good news'. I hope that helps, I know the start of a new year is tough, but hopefully things will even out for you :D The educator side of me says have a little patience, and my autism-mom heart says I've been there . . .

I am in the same boat - no feedback for my first grader. He has the McKay scholarship and those funds feed into the school itself but I am skeptical of him getting intense attention on reading and writing that is so challenged with. He is very articulate and one on one very engaging but at school he is like Michigan J. Frog - not one ribbit to be had! I wish we could request occasional video tapes so we can observe how he interacts with the classroom. I have not heard of SPED but will check it out! MDickens has very good advice. Perservere!

I sympathize with you about your daughters teacher being uncommunicative! My daughter's teacher this year is the same way. I posted about that on this site last Thursday. My daughter is in a fourth grade out of district Autism classroom. What really sucks is that she is non-verbal, so I RELY fully on the teacher for information! I agree that you probably ought to give it a little more time, but in the mean time, insist that the teacher provide more info. - I got so angry about this last week that I almost told my daughter's teacher off -not a good way to start the year off. If the teacher continues to be uncommunicative, maybe you could talk to her supervisor or the principal. I haven't received any specific info. yet this year about what my daughter has worked on either. No completed work sheets sent home - nothing! School started here on 8-18. I am only going to give them a few more days on this.

While I agree with getting to know kids if her Iep says she is in mainstream classes then that is where she should be day one or day 178. Unless the team including you agreed to a transitional phase and that is written into her Iep as a parent and as a special ed teacher for many years I stand by this kids who shuldgace been included but weren't because of "getting to know" take much longer for genes teachers and other kids to take "ownership" with as they belong to the "other" classroom where they spent the first two weeks :(
