My son is 11 and diagnosed with Asperger's spring of 2014. In his 504 plan it states that they school counselor will provide him with 'social training'. Well we are on week 5 of school and I saw the counselor while at the school yesterday and asked her when his training would begin.
1-she didn't realize that my son now has a 504 plan for ASD (she knew about his IEP for gifted....he is high functioning, but misses social cues left and right!)
2-she is open for suggestions for what to do… read more
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be looking them up. The FaceSay website looks very interesting. Our Psychologist recommended the book Creative Therapy 52 Exercises for Groups by Dossick & Shea.
I'm happy that the school counselor is teaming up with the Social Worker assigned to our school part time so someone with experience will be running the small group counseling sessions. Less than 36 hours after asking about when my son would be in classes she has letters asking for participation permission going out to the parents of 6 students....I'm wondering how the other 5 students got picked (whether they all have 504 plans too!) but I'm glad it should be a group of kids that he will be in counseling with. Now to see when the first session actually happens!
Though we have not used it yet as we are very new in our journey with Aspergers, our ed. Psychologist recommended a computer program called FaceSay which was developed at a University of Nebraska, (I think). It's around $80. It might be worth checking out.
There's also a book called Skill Streaming the Elementary School Child. There are about 60 prosocial skills that can be taught in a small group setting with typical kids.
Look up the Michelle winters Garcia " social thinking" curriculum. It is widely used and recommended for social skills therapy by a lot of experts I have talked to. Also UCLA runs a program for teens called PEERS ( I think) that used a lot of video modeling and is awesome for higher functioning kids. They may have resources online
