A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I need to know what do I need to implement in his IEP so that he will get the most out of his learning and excel? And is there some sort of program that will help a child with PDD/NOS with reading fluency?

Hi, I just had my kiddos annual (3rd grade) ARD. I asked early on this year that he be evaluated by the school for ASD. It was worth the paperwork because they followed him at school and noticed more things than I could prove as a parent only seeing him at home. Ask for occupational therapy, speech therapy and special education which would be covered under other health impairment (OHI). As for the state of Texas - they have their own criteria for ASD supplemental services- follow up by contacting your local school board and ask for anyone who can meet with you regarding your concerns for your son's ASD accommodatoins. (Be patient and provide your kiddos infor at any and all visits/meetings). Connect with the diagnostician and question the process that will get your kiddo the ASD help he/she needs. Lastly, visit with his/her teacher and show your concern as a partner that usually works best. You will do fine. I did it without the knowledge of this great support group 2 years ago. Be patient with yourself and your kiddo.
All the best. Praying for you.

@A MyAutismTeam Member well unfortunately the school wasn't the one's whom caught it my son's pediatrician whom I had met for the first time was back off of her maternity leave and had recognized some things that were similar unlike her son who is now 14. So we had him retested pediatric neurologist, tested for speech, and it is one more test. Well no results from the neurologist yet but his speech therapist said that he is showing signs of dyslexia and he needs speech therapy. They took him off of his seizure medication that the adult neurologist that he was seeing had placed him on. So he's been off of that for a month now. I am hoping that they come to some sort of proper diagnosis. The neurologist wants me to send him to a psychiatrist because my son told him about the visions that he had been experiencing. At the end of the conversation he told the neurologist since he writes down everything write this down. "I am not CRAZY!"

What you have to do is go over everything at the IRP meeting and find out what your child is lacking, which it looks like you have done, then you need to pick specific goals you want your child to attain and have them added to the IEP. You also have to remember there are only so many hours in a day and even if the school was doing their best they may not be able to fix everything all at once. You have to decide what you think is more important and make them work on those areas more than the rest. I know everything needs to be addressed at some point but some things can wait a little longer. You do not have to agree to everything the school suggests on the IEP and you can write in what you feel needs to be done, and if they do not agree you do not sign it.

On top of all this in some states like mine if the school cannot provide something in school they have to provide it out of school so you have to find out what your state laws are to determine that. To make things even more complicated if you have insurance you have to go through them to see if they will cover a therapy first, and if they cant then the school would have to, again depending on the state.

@A MyAutismTeam Member. He is already on an IEP. They gave me these diagnosis. I just feel he is still lagging. His SOL testing shows that he is on a 2nd grade reading level due to his fluency rate not because he doesn't know the word. They feel he has very mild symptoms. They believe that most of his mishaps come from his social/emotional issues and not being to adjust to work habits and change as quickly.
