I have an IEP meeting Friday. J was suspended out of school for 1 day (yesterday) after a "meltdown" at school. In my opinion, the behaviors/details are no different from any other documented incidents from this year that have led to ISS. I am looking for specific "behavioral manifestations" of ASD and ADHD. The school has tried to say he knows what he is doing and makes the choice. I want to have documentation of "symptom" and behaviors. I would like "official" descriptions. I do not want a… read more
May have that too. I do know where kids have both that's why that study was weird. Just hope they help him and do right thing regardless of diagnosis.

C if this is helpful at all. It's hard as,more specific to your sons issues and behaviors. Doc note would b very helpful and if u really need later on maybe outside Eval's from psych or someone. C what they have to say at meeting. I like to let them talk first then tell them my thoughts, concerns and any solutions. Give them a chance to do right but I usually get there bull at that point and excuses. Then I hit them with everything I 've collected, data, letters, dates, Evals, etc. To back me up.
Was your meeting yesterday or in a week? How did it go? I told u before how I feel for u on this one! You r doing everything right by the sound of it and I hope they do something in return to help your son instead of punishing him. Seems like they don't want to put the time, effort and money in to it and instead r looking for easy way out.Keep me posted.
They do have the right to do it but only if the child is a danger to others from what I know. You may want to reach out to your child's doctors and have them write a letter stating that meltdowns are a part of your child's condition, and bring that to the meeting.
This is the only thing I found from the CDC

They should know that meltdowns are a common in autistic children and they should also know that sometimes they are triggered by an outside experience, but also sometimes come from within as well. If your child has an ASD diagnosis and they are giving you a hard time with meltdowns then I would threaten them with a lawyer and I would fight them. You also need to go over the schools head here and speak to the director of special ED and the Superintendent, don't waste time with the school staff. They cannot just throw your child out of school.
