What's The Difference Between ABA And Floor-time???
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is receiving 20 hours of ABA therapy after school. His principle recommended replacing ABA with Floor-time. She said he would benefit more from Floor-time because he doesn't have behavioral issues. Does anyone know the difference between them? Has anyone's child benefited from Floor-time???

A good ABA program will incorporate techniques from Floortime, RDI, and other approaches as well as traditional DTT. I've read Dr. Greenspan's book and I can definitely tell that the BCBA who designed my little one's program is familiar with Floortime and has incorporated some of its techniques into the ABA program.

I don't think the school is trying to pull a fast one here (ABA is after school per OP), just making a recommendation. I think it really depends on the child, what motivates him/her, and how easy it is to teach him/her.

Even though we did verbal behaviour which is based on ABA, our therapists didn't use ABA techniques much to teach. Sometimes they would just play using floortime techniques. He could learn many different ways and didn't need rewards. We stuck with verbal behaviour because I liked the organized approach of having a curriculum based on my sons skills/gaps. We also did floortime separately ourselves, not to teach any specific skills but to continually engage and play with our child. We thought it was really helpful for the social and relationship aspect.

ABA is the standard for therapy when it comes to ASD and is very effective in most cases. You do not have to have bad behaviors to benifit from it, it teaches children how to modify how they do things and react to things in an appropriate fashion. I would not trade ABA for anything else because once you give it up it might be hard to get back. It kind of makes me wonder why they would suggest replacing it. Sorry to be negative but tge sounds like they are trying to pull a fast one and spend less money for a therapy. Here is a link to what floor time is.

My son was in an ABA program for 4 years was receiving 31 hours a week of therapy and would not for one minute though of replacing it. We have incorporated floor time in the ABA program and seen so many great successes. Please from one mom to another don't give up ABA try and incorporate floor time.Don't be afraid to ask any questions, ABA is so much more than dealing with behavior issues.
