My son's therapist did not recommend flash cards but I took pictures of his favorite items and printed them out to use. It worked great for him because he was able to relate the picture to the physical object.

Smethport flash cards are the best.

Big pictures and my kids liked going through them. It was one of the few things that my daughter really learned and remembered.
