Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband and I have been trying for months to potty train our son. Any tips or suggestions. He will soon be 3 years old.

one day at a time. My daughter was 3 when she finally started going potty. Of course when they start walking it works better. But it is just over and over again and again and it will click be patient. I was a motel on a weekend trip. My daughter and I always went someplace. I would do the potty over and over, yell dance, make a fool out of myself trying to praise her and get the connection. As I said we were at this motel, I was half asleep I felt her move, I just laid there still praying she was not up yet. Then I heard her, I watched as she went walked to the bathroom pull down her pull ups, get on the potty and go, wipe and then flush. Yeah was that not a beautiful morning. My best advise what I did was the same as I did with my pups with not being disrepectful, but every half hour to 45 mins I would say lets go potty and off we went and it works

Hi there, we pumped my son up with fluids and took him to the bathroom every 10 minutes. It is VERY taxing, and we had to lock ourselves up in the house the first weekend, but he was potty trained within a week. I will not omit his age was 4 1/2 of age. The ABA program he attends developed the system and reinforced it there as well. Once he was successful we moved the time up in 5 minute increments. If he made a mess, we made him clean it up. He hated that, so he worked hard to go to the potty. Also, for a reinforcement we gave him the ipad, which he LOVES) whenever he was successful. I hope this helps.

Best time is directly after ingesting a meal or fluid. The body's auto response. What goes in must come out. Also, be aware going or not going can become a control issue. The natural need to relieve the bladder is 4-6 hrs. More frequent coercion can result in frustration and control issues.
