How can you tell which symptoms are which? Do I request a second diagnosis? Why?
Yes, ADHD is very common in ASD. Maybe as high as 40%. ADHD is also a behavioural diagnosis and like ASD, it means we dont know what is really wrong but here are some things that may help, whether therapy or meds. Getting a separate diagnosis makes sense to me, not for the label but to get more ideas on how to help.
Yes my son takes Adderall and it works great, no side effects to speak of. He has been on it since about 5 and he is 10 now. We have changed the dosage a few times but it is noticeable if he does not take it.
They recently took my daughter off of a stronger drug and put her on it to, but we only use it when needed so for her it is not every day like my son and she is 9.
Adderall does not stay in the system long so it does its work and goes away. We also know it's working because if you forget to give it you can tell within a few hours.
Our biomed doctor wrote a whole book on treating ADHD without pharmaceuticals. That said, we exhausted his list of suggestions and my daughter was still having symptoms. So last summer we started her on a lowish dose of a short-duration stimulant just to get her through her school day. The medication really does help, but I'm glad that we tried natural remedies first. http://smile.amazon.com/ADHD-Without-Drugs-Inte...(Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)&sr=1-1&keywords=sanford+newmark
Sure can and my daughter has a DX to confirm she has both ASD and ADHD. I'm not sure where to draw the line but not every kid with autism is also hyperactive. We've seen different therapists' waiting rooms and different classrooms with ASD kids and they don't all act the same way.
And @A MyAutismTeam Member, did they offer have a treatment option? drugs?
