Im thinking of going back to work and I don't know of any after school care in my area for ASD kids. My son is 5 and 1/2 and very hyperactive minimally verbal and potty trained. I don't know if the 'regular' daycare centers will accept him. I live in North Brunswick NJ.Any ideas? Thanks MAT!
My son goes to a regular daycare and has his ABA therapist there with him until I pick him up.
The medicaid waivers are designed for situations like this. Contact your local department of social services (ask for the ADULT services;..atleast that is how it works here) and tell them you would like a screening for the medicaid waiver that provides attendant care and respite...EDCD is the common name but some states ahem different names, stands for Elderly and/or disabled with consumer directed it is designed to assist people to continue to reside in a community and not nursing home or special treatment facilities. It has NOTHING to do with whether or not you would ever place your son in one (though the answer to "where would your son go if you/primary care givers were not around?" is a hospital/residential school due to level of need).
Also if you have ABA coverage with your insurance or in home behavior therapy then a lot of time the therapist will work with your child in daycare. My son's therapy occurs at after-care now and he is doing pretty well :) good luck
