So my parents and sisters know that Carter has Autism but we haven't told any other family members. My husband and I both feel that we don't want to hear what we should do or lectures on how things are. We both feel that once we have things situated and when people ask we will tell. My family knows Carter is in therapy and we are definitely not hiding him.

Do actually what you're doing. It takes adjusting to all your son and your family are going to be going through. Absolutely wait until people (extended family) ask you. You make the call on when and who you want to share the information with.

Would you contact all the extended relatives if your kid made the honor roll? Probably not so it's not necessary they know much at this point if they aren't going to around.

Expect everyone to offer advice which is ok but a lot of it will be superficial because it's not an issue they've had to face or it will be about somebody else who had some form of autism and how they handled it. After a while, you'll have heard everything especially after you done some research. If the experts don't have a silver bullet for autism for all those living with it, then no one really has definitive answers to the hard questions- you will be the expert at least on your kid by default.

Agree with RaeJohnson... address questions as they arise. And try to explain how whatever behavior(s) prompted questions is part of autism.

Thank you for all the advice. My husband and I did decided to tell the rest of the family. We are always around them so we wanted to inform them. Knowing that my family would be very supportive it was actually nice to get it out there, to make them aware that Carter is who he is and always will be.
