I can't put him in public school bc he was pushed out 4 yrs ago bc they could no longer handle him. The past 4 yrs he's been in a private school which I love that they treat him like family instead of a burden like he public school did. Problem is this small school is not equipped to teach him (he's the only autistic child in the school). I live in Palm Bay, FL and can't find anything, I've been looking for almost a year now. Please help!!!
@A MyAutismTeam Member is she on a Medicaid waiver ? If so, your support administrator should find another program for her
Praying for her.
Unfortunately, it is based on the state as far as what is offered in the schools. I know in SC, specifically, Charleston, all schools have an autistic program, with trained teachers assigned. They really helped our daughter, she was able to stay until she turned 21, and then they graduated her. She is like a 7 year old, as far as her education and what she knows. The scary thing, is that once they graduate from high school, there are not many programs for adults with autism, and if your a single parent that can be a serious problem, because you may not have anywhere for them to go, and the single parent can't work. So sad, as the state or school system is there for them all through school, but once they graduate, many states have nothing. My daughter, did have an exceptional program to go to, which was 25.00 per day, however, just this week, she had a meltdown and we were told she could not return, until we meet and discuss her behaviors, and if they do not improve, she can not come back. Have no idea what we are going to do :-(. I just pray God opens another door.
The only good place I know of in FL is Eden but they are on the west side in fort Myers and Naples. I am not aware of any on the east. The school districts in FL are not very good in general, I wish you luck.
Ask your district which private Autism/special needs schools that they can send him to since they can not meet his needs. They have to have an option and provide him with something appropriate. They can not legally push him out. Even if you have been providing his private school you now need help from your district. They also need to provide his transportation. This is how it is in Il. and they are the cheapest State, so I can not imagine it being different in your state. Equip for equality can help.
