States Great For ASD Kids In Terms Of The Law, Waiver Program, Insurance, Schools, Services.

We might have to move from CT. Would like to ensure that we made a good decision about the next state we move to. Would really appreciate any views on the best states for kids with ASD. Right now, OH and PA may hold job opportunities. But we don't know which state is better for 8-year old son regarding the law, waiver program, insurance, schools, services etc.

I you check out this link it is a pretty good indication of the best places. I would caution though because just because a state has now put policies in place does not mean they are good now. We are still talking about school systems and available programs, and then medical care needs to be addressed as well.

I live in MA and I think it is the best or if you want to argue the point top two or three. Ma had the best medical care in the country with some of the best specialists you can find. Other states are good and you can find specific doctors better but in general MA is the best in terms of medical care.

I have heard that California, Oregon, Washington New Jesey tend to be really good states along with MA that is. For the most part stay away from the south and any state without state tax. The north is best in most cases.

The school that my daughter attends in California is the worst. When my daughter started kindergarten she could write her name, count up to 32, and was able to read a little bit, now she cannot any those things. Her teacher would give her packets to complete. I am not sure about the rest of the state, but in Vallejo where I live is the worst.

OH apparently has an autism scholarship which sounds great. http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Other-Resource...

I live in PA. Depends in part on where in the state. Obviously, Philadelphia/Pittsburgh offer more services than more rural areas.

We do have a good Medicaid waiver program (most kids qualify) and insurance mandate for large group insurance, but hours for behavioral services aren't always great. School placement.... depends on district. Mainstreaming is pretty aggressive especially compared to NJ. My area doesn't do integrated co-teaching and instead uses pullout for kids who can't be in FT 100% of the time but don't need self contained. Districts are small (except SD of Philadelphia--which I can't really recommend) so some services are provided by area Intermediate Units and your kid can be bused elsewhere. An intemediate Unit covers a whole county or multiple counties and shares services.

Schools in general in PA are very unequal from district to district. We do have an Approved Private School program for kids who don't have an appropriate district/IU setting and the state splits the cost with the district so the placements are not impossible to get. My child is still in preschool so this may not hold true for all kids (especially those who qualify for an APS ABA-based placement, or in other areas of the state) but here there is a real division between the behavioral services provided outside of school through BHRS and the classroom program. Other states provide more behavioral services in school. Technically the classroom does utilize ABA (Competent Learner Method which the state is very big on) but not 1:1.

Thanks very much dualspectrumdad! Unfortunately, at least for now, the job offers are in OH and potentially in PA. Would like to know how either of these states compare. MA sure sounds pretty good.
