Alternative Medications To Risperidone
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter has been on risperidone for many years and had good luck with it controlling moods and behavioral outbursts. Unfortunately her prolactin levels have gone extremely high and now she also has high cholesterol despite a fairly good diet and normal BMI. Her doctor wants to take her off the risperidone and try something else. Any suggestions on alternatives other than abilify(she had an adverse reaction to abilify a few years ago)?

My son went from risperidone to prozac and he's been on it for a few years. It works better than risperidone ever did in our case.

We had a work up done with a doc that specializes in biomedical treatment of autism (one way to find one is google MAPS practitioner and your area). We found one that ordered lots of blood work and other tests to find out what was going on biologically with our kid, and was subsequently able to prescribe supplements geared to his specific needs. I am so glad that we did, as our traditionally-trained physician did not order this kind of workup. Our son definitely benefitted, in that once we got his bowels and supplements straightened out, his aggression went away! I think his "episodes" likely occurred when he was in pain.
I will include the website of our current doc below, so you can get an idea of what this could entail. Good luck!

For a simple question, which you may have already been through, have you considered doing a full biomedical work up? Could be that some supplements could help even out or hit the metabolic cause of her outbursts. Hope you find an effective alternative...

Ive heard chlonodine... Uh think i spelled that wayyyyy wrong lol..but heard its had many uses..uts actually a blood pressure med but successfully used for adhd autism and other things and its low dose and mild..also ive always seen aderol as a huge huge help for mood swings and such..have a friend who has battled depression abd bi polar most of her life been on everything..few years ago a dr took her off everything nd put her on aderol and she was 100% different...like felt better the whole way round..just i think the timing isnt right..she had a hard time sleeping but i think taking at different time & maybe lower dose would help that..i dont think anything over powering oneself is ever good. And with aderol the appetite can go fast! So she will probably loose weight fast..they always keep track of that.

Be very careful---my son had a terrible reaction to Prozac a few years ago and recently had trouble with Abilify and had to stop it after taking it for a few short weeks. Tenex and Clonidine have really helped him.
