Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Montessori Schools With An ASD Child? Pros/cons?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone have any experience with montessori schools with an ASD child? Pros/cons? The diagnosing therapist said he didn't recommend it due to the lack of structure but I've been told by others it may be a good option. My son is 4 and we are looking ahead to the next school year.

What you have to consider is that these schools are private and do not have to confirm to the same straight regulations as public. On the same lines these schools do not have as much structure or curriculum as public schools either. I am also not sure whether the staff is trained in special Ed or ASD.

A friend of mine had her children in a Montessori school, her children, do not have any type of challenges....she and her husband felt after sometime, that the school was not structured enough and they decided to transfer their children to their school district.

I think you should not rule Montessori out as everyone has a different child and a different experience, BUT, I believe that if your child has ASD, then your district can provide the supports needed for your child to succeed, as opposed to maybe the Montessori not being able to help? I don't know. Keep reviewing and researching. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!!!

We had bad luck with a Montessori, primarily because they did not have any knowledge about autism and did not want to learn. As a private school they did not have a mandate to accommodate disabilities, either. However, the main problem may just have been the teachers at this school. My daughter did like the diversity of activities: chess, Latin, science, etc., even in early elementary.

I would suggest visiting the classroom, he would be in for about 2 hours. I would also visit other programs as well. You know your son, so you'll know what will be the right fit for him. I would decide if you wanted his therapies ot, pt, ect at school or home. If the regular school district has a autism classroom, or an integrated kindergarten. You can also split his day and be in an autism classroom for educational and all specials with a Regular kindergarten. Write your list of wants, needs, and no way, then start asking questions and visiting classrooms.
