Is There Help Available Outside Of School Without Diagnosis?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Pediatrician insists on getting diagnosis and not referring daughter anywhere for therapy or assistance.. pediatrician sent us to 2 places that are pointless that cannot give diagnosis.. we just desparately need some behavior tips/help with the tantrum meltdowns screaming anger issues..

A neurologist or developmental pediatrician can diagnose. Without a diagnosis, some insurances will cover speech and OT. For ABA you usually need a diagnosis to get it covered by the insurance. The early intervention program in your state will provide services without a diagnosis and it's free.

With or without a diagnosis help varies depending on your state. It's also, unfortunately, rarely cheap.

I will echo finding a pcp that will listen!! My peditrician ignored our concerns chalking things up as "normal boy behavior" for 3 years... i thought maybe it was just me over analyzing things. It wasnt until my pastors daughter, who went to college to work with autistic children, asked if we have had Isaac tested that i was finally relieved that i wasnt losing my mind.... and angry that his dr ignored my concerns. She told me to find a new dr. And that was the smartest thing i ever did for him! His new dr picked up on it immediately and referred him to a psychiatrist for testing. She says hes high function, which we knew, but definitely has autistic markers and will need to find out for sure so we can keep him from falling behind in school. If your doctor isnt listening.... please find another dr! Its worth it when it comes to getting any referral needed for testing for insurance coverage. Really important for coverage!! (I work for an insurance company... be sure to call your insurance company and ask questions so you know what is needed prior to going for testing or therapy. Know your limits, in network doctors, whats your coverage for any out of network drs.... get as much info as you can get so you are prepared)

I agree there are things you need the diagnosis for. The issue is that a doctor can do a referral but the insurance will only pay based on diagnosis code so you do need them. If you are looking for anything from a state agency they are going to want them to.

If you have issues with your PCP you can have a psychiatrist or a neurologist do it.
