Does Anyone Have A Child With Asd And Anxiety?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 9 yrs old boy had few anxiety /panic attacks when he is close to the elevator, escalator and some stairs. Sometimes I need to wait 10/30 minutes until he is ready to use the escalator. He is afraid to sleep alone, can't even go to the restroom alone someone must go with him . He's having many potty accidents at school, his explanation is that he can't hold it, there's dead bugs in the lights of the restroom and he is scared. Any suggestions?

Thank you. I too notice mine had the fears of bugs, dirt,....anxiety in general. He shakes a little pretty often. I too just reassure. Thanks for letting me know your child grew out of some fears. That helps give me hope.

my son had trouble being able to get to the bathroom, wanted me to to go with him. I finally realized it was not the bathroom that was a problem.....but there were smoke detectors on the way to the bathrooms, they had red lights that would blink occasionally and I believe that is was what was the problem ( although possibly they may have made a sound that I did not hear). It is often hard to know what the real problem is. My son had been talking but about 6 years old, was so frustrated as he talked mostly in pronouns, and we would try to interact and ask what "it" was, or where "there" was and he got so frustrated because he couldn't find the proper words and get us to understand, he spent most of the year just grunting rather than talking. When he would talk he would say "he wished he was dead" and then he would add that "he wished I was dead" I thought he hated me, it was many years later I realized he wanted me with him. (not that he didn't like me.)

My 14 year old son had many things that freaked him out when he was younger. He refused to walk down the (15 ft long) hall on his own. Someone had to walk with him. Would not turn the shower on or off by himself. Scared to death of flying bugs ~ especially butterflys. Food could not touch on his plate ~ sometimes he'd wash & dry his plate in between each helping. We never made a big deal out of them & assisted him as he needed. Little by little these phobias disappeared.

We went from always needing a light on in his bedroom while he sleeps to the room needing to be completely void of light ~ hurrah for black out curtains. At one point, he slept best in a sleeping bag on his bed ~ he also slept well with a tent bed ~ that eventually wore out, then he didn't like it anymore.

Seems like the fears change from one day to the next. We try hard to take them in stride & just be there to help him through.

My daughter is claustrophobic, but it's not all due to her Asperger's. She gets part of that from me, but it's worse with her. She doesn't mind elevators, but touring places like Ruby Falls she doesn't like. She's on Abilify which helps her a lot with anxiety in general. Part of it is just growing up too. The hormonal stage of early teens wasm't easy, but she made it through.

Oh, yeah, anxiety is part of our picture, also. Really depends on the situation and who our son is with. Our son is helped by MgSO4 cream and GABA supplements. Good luck.
