How To Get A Toddler To Wear Socks?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter will not wear socks. She cries and has a really bad reaction if I try to put them on her. Her shoes and feet smell terrible. I know it seems silly but I don't know what to do about it. I have washed her shoes, but it seems to make the smell worse. I am at the point where I have to get her new shoes at least once a month or more because the smell is awful. Has anyone had this issue and if so is there a certain pair of socks that might be more comfortable then others for her or should… read more

Bamboo socks are an excellent choice, absolutely @A MyAutismTeam Member and NicoleKaylee2013!

I use as many bamboo products as I can, even washcloths and towels for my sensory sensitive little guy! Incredibly soft and non-irritating fabric. Good luck!

Hi, NicoleKaylee2013! I'm so behind these days! I just saw this! Well, ABA doesn't do brushing, but an OT does, just in case it wasn't confusing enough. ;) It's weird that ABA would even comment on it, unless they do OT too. Anyway, if you google wilbarger brushing protocol, you will find info on it. Honestly, I think it's really weird and I don't understand why it works, but it does! You brush their body w a little brush and do joint compressions after, and do it every 2 1/2 hours. You have to be trained by an OT to do it though. It helped us w lots of sensory defensiveness and also with eating textures. I really hope you find something that helps!! We did ugg knockoffs for my daughter and that worked, but with each sensory kid it's so hard to know. We also did socks inside out. Best wishes!!

Have you done brushing? Really helped my kiddo with sensory defensiveness. Might be worth asking OT. Hopefully some of these posts will help! I know the bamboo socks are great, and interesting about the anti fungal ideas. I might need to try on my daughter. Good luck to you

Speak with occupational therapy about it. Socks aren't really a necessity though...

I think this is most likely sensory. My daughter won't wear socks at all in will only wear shoes outside. When she is in the house or the car they come off. She also has an issue with cloths and layers and it has gotten worse since she was taken off one of her meds. Shoes are an issue because without the socks they do tend to smell. Washing them does not work so we end out buying them a lot.

If this is sensory it is most likely not just socks so if the child has issues with touching, cloths or things like that it is sensory and it needs to be dealt with accordingly. ABA and meds to help, along with redirecting, unfortunately it is not a quick fix.
