What Tests Are Done To Determine If A Child Is Autistic At 2 Years Of Age?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was just wondering what sort of things Doctors do to determine if a child is Autistic, if there are other tests they do to rule it out, how many tests are involved, how many people need to see him to make a diagnosis, and if any of it is traumatic for the child. Do they let a parent stay with the child during testing? I'd appreciate any information to help me know what to expect. Thanks! :)

You can also seek out a child neurologist. (How we got our son diagnosed).

The neurologist, his pediatrician, the school and us all pitched in to get a full picture of what was going on. There were some basic assessments, such as talking to him, observing him while he played, asking questions and an assessment that we all filled out.

You can also look into your local college/universities. Some will actually do free testing as part of a course work or an on-going study.

@A MyAutismTeam Member. Thank you for the information. Are you in a position to say whether the main caregiver is allowed to be with the child, or is the child taken away from all the family for these diagnostics. If I (the grandmother and primary caregiver) am not allowed to be with him, I'm not sure he'd get an accurate diagnosis. (Or would that hinder?) Oh, to be a fly on the wall! lol At any rate, I'm going to prepare lists of behaviors, words, and concerns I have, and if I'm not permitted to go, my son can show it to the clinician. Thanks again!
