A friend of mine recently started her son on Clonidine for the same type of symptoms . She reported it to be very effective , he also gets a good nights sleep .

Had similar issues went to clonidine and this helped a lot. Now he gets pretty solid 8-10 sleep which makes him ready to go next morning. Hope this helps

25 mgs of Melatonin???? I hope that is a typo. Not judging but that is WAYYY too much. No one (Even an adult) should ever take more than 5 mgs of melatonin. Children should take no more than 1mg. But a safer dose would be 0.5mg.

Melatonin is great, it's natural but like anything else, too much is a bad thing! If the melatonin is not working after 2 mgs, you should seek alternative solutions (Like you are now).

Too much melatonin can actually cause problems NOT sleeping. Plus the body realizes it has more than enough melatonin and STOPS producing its own Melatonin.

Melatonin Side Effects include:
Headaches
Nausea
Next-day grogginess
Hormone fluctuations
Vivid dreams and nightmares

Alternative solutions include:

#Removing naps (if applicable)
#Weighted Blankets
#No TV/Computers/Tablets etc an hour before bed. These actually stimulate the brain to keep it more active making it much more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
#Chamomile Tea (Or other chamomile products)
#A warm bath with lavender essential oils added
#A gentle deep massage before bed with lavender and/or chamomile oil (if he'll let you) The deep pressure from having his back, stomach, legs and arms rubbed will help with sensory seeking that may be preventing him from fall asleep.
#Yoga and Meditation and/or light physical exercise
#For the last hour before bed, use only dim lighting (and read to him/have him read)
#Doctor Prescribed Sleep Aids for children (If none of the above work first!) I am not that keen on medication if it can be avoided. However, many of the medications used for children to help them sleep at night are ALSO used to help them with focus and reduce hyperactivity. Think ADHD but we're not talking anything Ritalin-like, but like low doses of Clonidine.

With all of the ones (even if you excluded the medication) you can mix them together every night. It's entirely safe to do them ALL every single day! I would certainly start, if you allow him to, by removing the electronics an hour before bedtime as well as reduce lighting to induce a calm atmosphere.
