Dentist Appointment
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is due for her check up and cleaning. I called a new dentist because the last place we went was awful. They told me they are willing to put her under general so they can get her check up and cleaning done. Is this a normal procedure? How do you accomplish a dentist appointment
*her last dentist appointment, they strapped her into a board and she lost it, had a horrible melt down. By the time we left she had a busted lip, a cut on her gums, and scrapes and bruises all over her arms… read more

Just horrified by your previous experience. Anesthesia isn't good for kids. If you can, get someone who is gentle and doesn't use anesthesia. Specially if it's just a check up and cleaning.

I worry constantly about my daughters teeth and going to the dentist. She will not let me brush them. I am sorry to hear about your experience.

That is exactly how it is with our son. He is only 2 and he doesn't understand much only a few things. Explaining doesn't work at all. We just don't ever take him and I do the best I can to brush his teeth. I do have to gently force him but it only takes 10 or so seconds to get his teeth. I just can't imagine having him being tied down. And I wouldn't want him put under. He hasn't ever seen a dentist and I think it's not a good choice but I don't know what else to do right now.

Oh no! My son just had his first appointment at the age of five because I was afraid the doctor like MANY of the others wouldn't be patient with him. I lucked up and found a good dentist on the first go. No forcing, tying down, rushing...I wouldn’t trust a doctor that can't understand the needs of their clients. Please interview all potential doctors and ask about their treatment plan.

Mine went to the dentist for the first time a few years ago and never went back. Anesthesia was necessary for us, but I hated it and they wouldn't let me be in the room, I was terrified. No cavities, though. I'm currently looking for a dentist who has experience with autism or IDD, but they are very hard to find
