Our 2 1/2 year old son was just diagnosed with ASD. He is verbal and is high functioning, but we are looking at getting him into a developmental preschool though the public school system. Although the school has not evaluated him yet (apparently we have to wait until August), it has been all of his therapists' recommendation that he be in an inclusion program. We are looking to move to Cobb County, but the Cobb County School System will not meet with us or tell us anything about our Special… read more

Our son was evaluated by the SE system of Cobb County Schools (yes, he had to wait until the school year began because they don't evaluate during the summer). He has been in the SE classroom (5-days a week) for a year an a half now and will start regular kindergarten next August. I really like the services he is receiving now. His class is only 4 students this year, so he receives a lot of help. He also has speech and occupational services once/week. We want to move, but are staying for now because the services he is receiving are really great and he thrives under consistency.

Unlike the previous commenter, I would say that it really depends on which school is offering the services. The school he is attending has adequate and superb services, but the school next door might now.

I strongly advise you to find another county. Our experience with Cobb County special Ed programs at the elementary school level has been so disappointing. Overcrowded classrooms, general ineptitude at all levels. We plan to leave the county. I only regret not doing my proper research before I moved here.
Please continue with your research and seek another location. Wish you all the best.

Our Skill Builders Group is at Barnwell Elementary in Johns Creek. We live in Milton and the Skill Builders class that meets closer to where we live was scheduled for a day/time we couldn't attend, so they allowed us to go to the one in Johns Creek. I hope this helps. Good luck with the evaluation and IEP meeting and let me know if you have any other questions.

Where is your skill builder program? We are in the process having our evaluation done for my son. So I am going ahead and researching the schools for the preschool in the Atlanta area.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. We ended up moving to Fulton County (in the Milton area). Our experience thus far has been great. He is in private therapy and recently started a Skill Builders program at a local elementary school since he's not yet eligible for pre-k. It's too early to tell if the elementary school will be great but based on our first IEP meeting we feel good. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help if you're considering moving to Fulton county.
