Hi I'm new on here :)
I have a 2 1/2 year old son that we know is on the spectrum ( he gets diagnosed in October), when and how should I go about potty training him?
We had my youngest potty trained by age 3. He would remove his diaper and lay it down then come and tell me. So we had him go around the house all weekend without a diaper and when we saw that he was going to go we would get his potty chair and put him on it he was pretty much trained that weekend.
It depends on their level of ability and understanding. I have two on the spectrum, the older is higher functioning than the younger. The older one was trained by 3, the younger, while showing all the signs of readiness including holding it until he has a diaper to go in if he is naked, isn't ready or possibly able (hard to tell, since he is kind of stubborn) to go into the bathroom, use the toilet and etc when it is time. At his school the currently toilet him every 2 hours to get him used to going in and trying to use the toilet, and that is pretty much what we do at home also as consistency is key, no matter what age! I do know that there are many children with pretty severe diagnosis who are totally potty trained (albeit it takes a bit of time) so I am sure even if it doesn't happen right at 2 1/2 or 3..it will happen with patience and consistancy.
@A MyAutismTeam Member thanks!!
@A MyAutismTeam Member it just shows me "what autism means" page. But I don't see the potty training stuff :/
@A MyAutismTeam Member idk if it's my phone but I don't see what you're talking about on the article π But thank you for the advice! Much appreciated.
And thank you everyone else for the advice! I think I'll try around his third birthday or when I start to see more signs of him being ready
